Taking Heart

Ramadan is a holy month of the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. Fasting during Ramadan, which falls during the summer season, is one of the “five pillars” of Islam and is performed to learn compassion, self-restraint, and generosity. A meal called an Iftar breaks the fast each day. In 2019 Ramadan falls between sundown May 5 and June 4.

Taking Heart is a long-running program coordinated by MCC and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN) to bring Christians and members of other faith communities together with Muslims for food and conversation during Ramadan.

Minnesota mosques and Islamic Community Centers welcome their non-Muslim neighbors for a traditional Ramadan Iftar, inviting a time of learning and encounter. Participants hear a presentation about Islam/Ramadan and the reason for fasting, participate in the breaking of the fast with water and dates, have the opportunity to observe prayer, and then join at table for wonderful food and conversation.

The Open Houses are held primarily around the Greater Metro Area of the Twin Cities, but also in several communities throughout Minnesota. They are free and open to the public. Last year’s hosts were:
